What's Ahead
Amy Elliott on catching the "Next Big Trend"
By Shawna Kulpa
Do you always feel like you’re behind the eight ball when it comes to jumping on board with fashion trends? If so, don’t feel bad; it’s just the nature of jewelry and the fashion cycle. With fashion, a style is spotted on the runway, and variations of it will usually be on clothing store racks at the start of the next season. Jewelry styles take longer to develop and catch on.
“The pendulum swings quickly in fashion,” says Amy Elliott, contributing editor at JCK and the founder of its style and culture blog All That Glitters. “In jewelry, it might not penetrate for a few seasons to come.”
But that doesn’t mean you should sit on the sidelines for years waiting for a trend to finally emerge. There are places jewelers should watch for potential trends that may be worth keeping an eye on and doing a little planning for if they catch on. To find out where to look and what’s ahead, we recently talked with Elliott to see where she sees the fashion cycles spinning—and how we can all hop on.
