Seeing Is Believing: Case Study 2
By Shawna Kulpa
Tomas Wittelsbach of Seattle will be the first to tell you that he’s not a jeweler: He’s a sculptor. And perhaps it’s because he was trained in sculpture that he doesn’t believe there are any limitations to the types of designs he can create with the ZBrush 3-D software he uses.
“I think my sculpting background allows my mind to view the part as form and shape, rather than as jewelry,” he says. “I also think that when you’re using ZBrush, you’re outside of the typical CAD mind. When I’m using ZBrush, I have a stylus that is pressure and angle sensitive that allows me to interface with the program by touching the screen as if I were using a tool on clay. The program allows you to think of the object differently—it allows you to be an artist, not an engineer.”
