After reading Jenny and Tim’s story, I was touched and honored to be creating a sentimental piece for Jenny to cherish. Because jewelry is a personal object, an object which carries memory and identity, I started my process thinking about Jenny, her relationship with Tim, her job, her kids…the things that make her smile. With everything she had been through, it became crystal clear how devoted she is as both a mother and as a wife, daughter, and friend. In the face of adversity and tragedy, when her world was most shattered, she remained strong
I started with a pendant form, a piece that would sit close to Jenny’s heart and be a forever reminder of Tim’s love. Using very fine gauge platinum wire, I designed a round form, about 1 inch in diameter and 0.3 inch thick, with a flat top and bottom, keeping the pendant comfortable for daily wear. Each little piece of platinum wire serves as a reminder of the memories and great times Jenny and Tim had together as a couple. When her world was shattered, Jenny collected the bits and pieces of life and over time, has been putting them back together to form her new reality, a reality in which things are different than she dreamed they would be. With the support of her family and a guiding light from Tim, her painful situation is turning into a beautiful expression of hope and love. Sitting at the center of her pendant is a sapphire that radiates the color of Tim’s uniform, of the skies above, and of the waters at the Mille Lacs Lake they love.
In addition to the pendant, I wanted to create a complimenting pair of earrings with special meaning for the family, as they too have suffered a loss in this tragedy. I created two round hollow spheres, one that sits at the ear as a stud and one that dangles from the stud. Between the two spheres sit three additional stones: one diamond symbolizing the family that has surrounded Jenny through everything and two melee sapphires symbolizing Jenny and Tim’s two children. The stones graduate from white diamond to deep blue sapphire guiding the eye and linking the focus to the brilliant sapphire at the bottom.
